A local winery’s pinot noir has been named the best drop in the country at the prestigious Air New Zealand Wine Awards.
Queenstown vineyard Peregrine’s Central Otago pinot noir 2009 collected three gongs – including wine of the show, champion pinot noir and winner of the open red wine category – at a glitzy gala dinner in Auckland on Saturday night.
The Gibbston wine company’s co-owner Greg Hay says the awards exceeded expectations.
“It would’ve been great to get the pinot noir trophy, let alone get the other two. It’s amazing.
“It’s a big thing for Central Otago and obviously it’s a great thing for us as a winery. It’s a re-endorsement of the region as being at the forefront of growing world-class pinot noir basically. It’s brilliant,” Hay says.
Queenstown winemakers Gibbston Valley Winery also claimed the champion sustainable wine award for its China Terrace Central Otago pinot noir 2009.
