The write stuff: Author/benefactor John Cushen, left, with Cure Kids South Island philanthropic specialist Will Hall

A Queenstowner’s kids’ book on teddy bears’ goings-on during last year’s Covid lockdown is about to bear fruit for a children’s health research charity.

John Cushen last week handed over $10,000 to Cure Kids’ CEO Frances Benge from the sales of his book, Lockdown with the Bears.

Originally the Child Health Research Foundation, the charity, now 50 years old, was rebranded Cure Kids about 20 years ago when Queenstown was at the epicentre of its fundraising efforts.

Cushen, who’s only got about 50 copies left, says the cause is close to his heart.

‘‘Being an ex-teacher, parents can stuff up their lives, and adults, but, hey, every kid deserves a chance in life, and I feel for kids that don’t start off the race on the same line
as their mates.’’
