Queenstown’s council has confirmed it will start dishing out parking tickets in Lake Hayes and Shotover Country from tomorrow (July 24).
All vehicles illegally parked off roadways in the two suburbs will be ticketed.
Over the past month, the council has been educating people by putting flyers on vehicles
parked on verges and other prohibited spots, according to a press release this afternoon.
This has seen a drop “from an initial figure of over 100 vehicles to just 19”.
Council regulatory manager Anthony Hall was pleased with the response to recent education.
“As well as ruining the verges cosmetically, there is a lot of vital infrastructure underneath that can be damaged when vehicles park on it,” he said.
“This can cause disruptions to residents in the area, while fixing the problem can cost council and ratepayers a lot of money.
“It is also a safety issue for drivers and pedestrians.”
The council’s new traffic and parking bylaw came into effect on March 1.
Vehicles found parked illegally will now be subject to a $40 fine.
