The Wakatipu High student shaved 0.86 seconds off his previous personal best with a 31.64sec finish. Dennison, 15, also came fourth in the 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke in the open boys 15-plus category at the Alpine Aqualand event, which drew 130 contenders.

Sophie Gibson, 12, was named joint age group champion in the 11 and 12-year-old girls along with Alexandra’s Emma Dick.

Sophie won the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, 50m and 100m butterfly and 400m freestyle races and was runner-up in the 50m freestyle.

Dunedin’s Otago Swim Coaching Academy head coach Gennadiy Labara was on hand to pass on tips.
