Apres ski: DJ Dean Campbell
Thumping club nights and intimate live music gigs will draw revellers into Queenstown venues during Winter Festival.
The resort’s bars and clubs are embracing the festival like never before this year.
It means there is an eclectic collection of musical delicacies on offer – with dance music radio station George FM leading the charge with its Apres Ski nights.
Another highlight will be the Winter Sounds
music extravaganza at The World Bar on Thursday, June 28 - it will be led by talented Kiwi musicians Hollie Smith and A Hori Buzz. And impressive soulful Auckland nine-piece The Hipstamatics play at SkyCity Queenstown on Sunday from 9pm.
Festival director Simon Green says: “There’s some good balance to the programme.
“Part of the festival organisation this year has been encouraging these things to happen.
“We’ve put the Apres Ski
series together with the bars, so it’s shifted now to them being more involved.
“It takes the pressure off us having to do everything and there’s more scope for this in future years.”
George FM will broadcast live on weekdays from Monday, June 25, including breakfast and drive time.
The station will take over various bars during the evening to provide free parties. The week will culminate in a Thank George it’s Friday Apres Ski Party at Buffalo Club where station DJs and special guests will entertain festival-goers who have wiggled out of their winter coats and into dapper dance-floor dress.
The Winter Sounds
gigs at The World Bar follows the Apres Ski set.
Tickets to it are $60, with a line up including Smith and A Hori Buzz – which features renowned producer and instrumentalist Riki Gooch, Aaron Tokona of Cairo Knife Fight, LA Mitchell and Hori Tokona. (see panel)
Olmecha Supreme, DJ Downtown Brown and DJ Sir-Vere complete the ling up.
“We really embrace that particular night,” Green says. “It’s a good ticket price for a great line up and people will get a really good night.
“I guess The World guys are trying to fill that void left a wee bit by Revolver not being there anymore.”
