Freestyle mountain biker Kelly McGarry is set to backflip off Queenstown’s Lady of the Lake.
The top Kiwi rider will launch himself from the TSS Earnslaw into Lake Wakatipu tomorrow morning (Friday) to officially open Queenstown Bike Festival.
McGarry says: “My bike floats – hopefully I do too!”
The 31-year-old’s no stranger to backflips. He garnered worldwide acclaim after smashing 22-metre one over a Utah canyon late last year at the Red Bull Rampage.
The clip of the death-defying feat’s been viewed 17million times on YouTube alone.
McGarry opened the 2013 Queenstown festival in similar style by jumping on his bike from AJ Hackett’s The Ledge Bungy at Bob’s Peak.
Tomorrow at 9am, at Steamer Wharf, he’ll start from the captain’s cabin, ride along the iconic 101-year-old steamer’s roof and cut a ceremonial ribbon before back-flipping into the chilly waters about eight metres below.
Jet boat firm K-Jet will perform pickup/rescue and recovery.
The bike fest itself features 25 different events over the following nine days – from coffee rides, kids’ sessions and the family-friendly Tour de Wakatipu to extreme adventures like the DirtMasters Downhill, Coronet Enduro, downtown Slopestyle comp and the Mega Avalanche which descends the ridge of the Remarkables.
A full social programme features music, films, after-parties and the whacky 16inch World Championships in Shotover Street bar The Find.
