Wellington five-piece Family Cactus is quietly out to shore up its reputation as New Zealand’s premier indie band.
The group hits the resort tomorrow as part of an extensive nationwide tour.
And as well as road-testing tracks from recently-released second album Spirit Lights they’ll crank out tracks from acclaimed 2009 debut Come Howling.
But don’t expect a rabble-rousing performance.
Lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Adam Ladley instead prefers to propel his complex songs into what he describes as “story-driven mind movies”.
And he admits that reproducing their studio sound on stage isn’t easy.
“We had to sit down for quite a while to figure out how we were going to do some of these songs live because some of them are pretty lush and dense,” Ladley has said.
“But we like experimenting with the songs in a live setting and being able to take them for a bit of a walk.”
