Wacky Winter Festival highlight postponed

One of Queenstown Winter Festival’s wacky highlights the Birdman has been postponed until tomorrow (Sunday).

Festival boss Simon Green made the call to shift the event – involving contestants jumping from a makeshift pier into Lake Wakatipu – because of scheduled rough weather. It was supposed to be at 1.30pm today (Saturday).

The Birdman will now be held at 2pm, tomorrow. Registration will be at 11.30am.

Meanwhile Coronet Peak ski area is closed today, meaning the scheduled Mountain Bikes on Snow race has been moved to tomorrow (Sunday) at 11am.

Tonight stars and special guests in town for the New Zealand premiere of the new ‘Ice Age 4 – Continental Drift’ movie will hit the Blue Carpet down The Mall to Reading Cinema from 6pm to 7pm.

The Southern Stampede take on the West Auckland Admirals ice hockey team at Queenstown Ice Arena from 7pm. The Comedy Gala is at Memorial Hall from 8pm.

Festival Director Simon Green has made the call that due to inclement weather conditions, two of today’s Winter Festival events in Queenstown will be rescheduled to tomorrow (Sunday 24 June).

The Birdman competition, which was to start at 1.30pm today, has been postponed until tomorrow 2pm.  Registration will be at 11.30am.

Coronet Peak ski area is closed today, prompting the Mountain Bikes on Snow event to be moved to tomorrow 11am.
