Queenstown jewellery magnate Michael Hill, the resort’s party reputation and its two casinos all copped it during Winter Festival’s comedy gala at Memorial Hall last Monday.
The sellout, featuring 10 Kiwi comedians, ended with an onstage installment of Friday night TV show 7 Days, hosted by Jeremy Corbett.
During the “clippings” segment, in which contestants give their take on local news, Ben Hurley (right) pointed out Cosmic Corner might come to Queenstown.
“Just what you need down here – more ways to get messed up.”
Jeremy Elwood chimed in: “It’s like when you opened two casinos – because you guys really need more ways to spend more money.”
Show host Corbett took the mickey out of multi-millionaire Michael Hill’s call for $400,000 to have a shot at keeping golf’s New Zealand Open at his The Hills course in Arrowtown.
“That’s not really a news story because for Michael Hill, needing $400,000 is like us needing parking meter money. He should be able to find that if he just has a hunt around the couch. He’ll have that in his jeans pocket,” Corbett says.
