There’s plenty of action on and off the skifield this Winter Festival.

Ever-popular events like Mountain Bikes on Snow, the Speight’s Dog Derby, the Rail Jam and Grabaseat Mountain Mayhem return alongside new ones including Skin to the Summit, the Media Suite Charity Breakfast and an avalanche awareness seminar.

Relax on the sundeck at Coronet Peak – the hub for most of these zany events – and watch as the action unfolds, or throw caution to the wind and register to take part.

 

Mountain Bikes on Snow

Summer is gone but mountain bike season isn’t over yet – competitors in this event combine serious attitude with serious bike tyres on a crazy downhill course. Just seeing these guys and gals in action is worth the trip up the mountain.

American Express Ski through the Decades

Find those skinny skis, don that one-piece ski suit and head to Coronet Peak for some retro delights.

The Shirt Front run is the place to be at 10.30am as skiers – wearing gear from their favourite decade – show their style.

This tribute to Queenstown skiing features the young and young-at-heart, and there will be prizes for the best-dressed people up the mountain.

Speight’s Dog Derby

Dogs and their owners take the express chairlift to the top of Coronet Peak then – with their masters trying to keep them in check – pooches of all shapes, sizes and breeds will tear down the course at breakneck speed.

Mountain Safety Council Avalanche Awareness Seminar

This updates you on local mountain weather, snow conditions, safe route selection, avalanche rescue and new equipment – starting with an inspirational talk and slide-show from a guest speaker.

Funds raised will go to the Bruce Grant Youth Trust.

Skin to the Summit

Bring your headlamp and touring gear for an early-morning “skin” from Coronet Peak base building to the top of the express chairlift. Your rewards are a glorious sunrise, hot breakfast at the cafe and some fantastic spot prizes.

Or become a supporter, avoid the hard work and receive a special package and breakfast.

You must pre-register at www.winterfestival.co.nz. Note: the exact course depends on snow coverage.

grabaseat Mountain Mayhem 

Be part of the action or watch in wonder as contestants take on some hard and fast courses in contests like the Suitcase Race and Dash for Cash.

Enter on the day at the Grabaseat tent on the sundeck – there are awesome prizes to be won and plenty of family-friendly events.

Rail Jam

Watch talented freestyle riders and skiers go all-out on purpose-built rails and boxes to qualify for the final contest. The action pumps up for the finals with live DJs adding to the atmosphere.

To enter and win big prizes, you must pre-register at Coronet Peak’s guest services area from noon-1pm.

When: Sunday, July 5, qualifying rounds 1pm, finals 3.30pm
