Killer rock band The Fletcherz were named top teen talent of a local music competition on Friday night.
The four-man band won the Ultimate Battle of the Musos 2010 – held at the Stanley Street X-it Youth Centre – ahead of four other Wakatipu High acts.
Kiwi music heavy-hitter Mike Chunn, guest judge at the event, was impressed with the collective ability of Queenstown’s five finalists.
“There’s some magic in the water. I loved the originality. I loved the variety. I loved the enthusiasm. I loved the intensity,” Chunn, a founding member of 70s supergroup Split Enz, says.
The Flectherz’s guitarist George Hartshorn, 14, also took home the best musicianship award, despite being sick on the night.
Holly Arrowsmith, 16, singing as Water to Wine, won best original song, while Bruno Shirley was named best stage presence. His band – a wildcard entry, The Artful Dodgers – also won best act.
Dynamic duo Emily Burns and Max Gunn were jointly named best vocalists.
The Fletcherz showcased their skills again at an X-it Youth Centre fundraiser dinner on Saturday night, where Mike Chunn shared stories as guest speaker.
