Running parallel to events at the start of 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum, The Bourne Legacy is the story of Aaron Cross (Renner), a genetically modified soldier who is the product of Operation Outcome, another black ops program run by CIA team leader Byer (Ed Norton). Cross, training in Alaska, soon discovers he is targeted for termination as Bourne has exposed the Treadstone project, and the CIA are panicking. But Cross needs his pills and needs the help of Dr. Marta Shearing (Weisz), who works in the lab responsible.

In Jason Bourne, we had a patriotic Army captain who is trained up the old-fashioned way, is used as an assassin, loses his memory and goes hunting for his own identity and those who betrayed him. In Aaron Cross, we have a super soldier who is the product of a chemical cocktail and in need of his next fix. I still got the impression that if these two were to meet, Bourne could still kick Cross’ ass.

There is, however, a spectacular motorbike chase sequence through the streets of Manila which is the highlight.
Renner and Weisz make for a good pairing, and Norton weasels his way through intent on killing Cross, and Operation Outcome, with it. I was very happy to see characters Pamela Landy and Noah Vosen back even if their appearances were brief.

This is a three star movie but only the chase scene, and Renner’s performance save The Bourne Legacy from total inertia.
