Ben Proudlove’s on an endless winter fuelled by a love of snow and music.
The British DJ returns to Queenstown this month with his long-running, globe-travelling club night Superfly DJs.
He’ll be behind the decks at 1876 – Superfly’s new home for the 2015 season – every Sunday along with fellow residents DJ Lawrensu and Jack Human.
Proudlove plays underground house and techno, Lawrensu brings hip-hop, soul and funk, while former Tardis resident Human both produces and plays drum ‘n’ bass.
Proudlove, 30, says: “It represents a quite a range of music which keeps it fresh.
“The ethos of the night is to play what we like, not what we’re forced to play, so it’s at the underground end of the spectrum – lesser heard records but contemporary stuff.
“We’re all excited to host some good parties throughout the season.
“It’s all about having a good night out and listening to some music you might not otherwise hear.”
Proudlove’s showcased some of the top names in dance music, sharing booths with the likes of The Freestylers and The Klaxons.
And he’s played everywhere from Liverpool’s Chibuku Shake Shake and Manchester club Sankeys to Ibiza, Italy and Japan.
He’s spends the European winter in Verbier, Switzerland, where he won the People’s Vote in the 2015 Verbier DJ Awards, and works as a ski instructor.
“You live out of a suitcase a bit, which can get old,” he says.
“But I’m actually a school teacher by trade – I’d go from club nights in Liverpool to being call Mr Proudlove by pupils on a Monday morning.
“So I jacked it in and went to do back-to-back seasons.”
It’s the second season Superfly has come to the Queenstown.
“We started with an après session at Buffalos, which in hindsight is not really the venue which represents what we’re about.
“But I was going in completely blind and we needed to get the ball rolling.”
The night then moved to Searle Lane’s Bar Up before settling on 1876.
“It’s just what we’ve been looking for, so we’re looking forward to a successful season.”
The club night will feature guest DJs through the season, while Proudlove will also DJ solo at 1876 on Tuesdays, Bar UP on Thursdays, and at a 5-8pm après session with Lawrensu on Fridays at Bungalow.
Superfly Sundays official opening party is at 1876 this Sunday from 9pm. Free admission.
