Queenstown muso Ruby Bain has been named a top teen talent at the prestigious Smokefreerockquest competition.
She was one of 18 high school acts belting out original tunes at the Central Otago finals at the Memorial Hall last Saturday night.
The Year 10 Wakatipu High soloist claimed second-place honours, walking away with $400 in vouchers.
Out of 12 Wakatipu High acts taking part, Bain came away as the only local with a chance at the national final in Hamilton in September. Eight finalists will be chosen from DVDs submitted by regional winners across the country.
Mount Aspiring College rock band Mercury Brigade, from Wanaka, took out first prize with Up The Creek Without A Capo from Cromwell College winning the People’s Choice Award by text vote.
Event organiser Glenn Common was impressed with the “unbelievably, consistently strong” acts.
Wakatipu High male soloist Hertzog Burger claimed the best song award, while Danielle Voschezang, bassist with Queenstown band Talkback Amp, won in the best women’s musicianship category.
