A local lass is trading her board for wheels when she heads up Coronet Peak for the Mountain Bikes on Snow competition today.
Kate Fluker is a virgin in the wacky Winter Festival race but has her technique planned already – sticking her legs straight out.
“I’m going to go down with my legs off the pedals.”
The 22-year-old began mountain biking last October and since then has competed in the Tour de Wakatipu. She came second in the 50km Motatapu bike race in March and now wants to try her luck on the snow.
Fluker’s a tad nervous about the downhill race after hitting ice while biking on Bowen Peak two weeks ago and falling off.
“It’s going to be really weird and a bit scary.”
