Mystery men bounce away with Birdman (slideshow)

Full-body lycra suits and bounce balls won three mysterious Queenstowners the Birdman title during today’s (Sunday’s) wacky Winter Festival Day on the Bay antics.

The three mates, who wish to remain anonymous and are merely known as ‘Bounce’, danced, bounced and splashed their way into first place to pocket a $500 cash prize.

The first-time orange entrants in their revealing get-up claim to have put a lot of hours in at the gym to get their bodies primed for the parody in front of thousands of festival-goers lining Queenstown Bay.

“We’re just three guys that thought we’d put a bit of joy and a bit of love into the Winter Festival. There’s no snow, so we thought we’d get people excited,” a faceless bouncer says.

The Birdman entrants in quirky costumes were the first to brave icy Lake Wakatipu waters during the high-charged Day on the Bay action.

Skippers Canyon jetboat driver Andre “Groove” Cockburn showed up competitors from Kawarau Jet, Thunder Jet, Shotover Jet and Dart River Jet Safaris on the jetboat sprint course for the second year running in time of 1min 07sec 38milsec.

The inaugural paddle board race provided plenty of laughs with experienced punters and first-time virgins battling it out around the Queenstown Bay course.

Veteran contender Mark Wilson took out the Splash and Dash sprint for the second time in eight years.

And some racy underwear was revealed when contestants ditched their clothes for the Hundy 500.
