Movember 8 – Know your Pro(state)


It’s here! Today I woke up and Jess told me that my Mo had officially arrived! It’s a baby at the mo but every day I am seeing a change, and my my, how fast they grow up.. pretty soon it will be a teenager and demanding attention from all that look at it.


It’s funny to see people who are also participating in Movember around town – can’t say that I have seen many but when I do it gives me a smile (and I was right about most people going for the chopper) I can’t say that I have had any Moscrimination, although this is early days yet – Jess ‘doesn’t mind’ it… as long as it stays on my side of the beard, I mean bed.


[Jess: I’ve got to say it IS getting a little disturbing… and it’s PRICKLY! It’s just at that stage where it’s really not that pleasant kissing my man, and in that regard I’m looking forward to it getting a bit longer, but then it’s already starting to look pretty hideous. I am full of fear of how shifty my boyfriend will soon look.]


One of the best things about participating in Movember, and especially doing this blog – is that it is raising MY awareness to the issues of Movember. I figure if, say, 20,000 blokes take part in Movember and if it educates ¼ of us about these issues and if  ¼ of THOSE get checked out and it saves 10 lives through early detection, then this whole thing is worth it :-{)

Prostate Cancer

In New Zealand prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men over the age of 45 and the leading cause of cancer related deaths in men over the age of 75 years. Around 2,700 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and around 600 men die from it – (that’s nearly two each day).

Regular testing using a blood test to check for the presence of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) can help to detect cancer earlier. An elevated PSA may indicate that your risk of having cancer is higher than someone with a normal level. Further testing is the only way to positively diagnose cancer.

How to lower the risk
The causes of prostate cancer are not yet fully understood but there is increasing evidence that there are some risk factors. Doing regular exercise to help maintain a healthy body weight and reducing the amount of red meat that is eaten may help lower the risk of prostate cancer. Other risk factors that cannot be changed include a family history of prostate cancer (a brother or father who has had prostate cancer) and increasing age. 82% of prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over the age of 60.  





So there you have it… regular testing and exercise! I know there will be a thought process which goes like “if I do a test I may have something and I’d rather not know” and THAT is what Movember is here for.. raising awareness for these MOst important issues..
