Midnight Youth a ballad-free zone

Queenstown fans will be among the first to get a sneak preview of ear-splitting new sounds from Kiwi chart stars Midnight Youth.

The five-strong Auckland band rocks Revolver tomorrow on a two-date South Island jaunt.

As well as road-testing tracks that’ll feature on the follow-up to last year’s chart-busting debut album The Brave Don’t Run, singer Jeremy Redmore says the low-key gigs in Queenstown and Dunedin will be ballad-free zones.

“We wanted to play sweaty, small venues where we can blast out a proper rock set and places like Revolver are perfect for that,” Redmore says.

“We won’t be chucking in our slower songs like Golden Love either, so it’s going to be pretty full-on.”

The Midnight Youth lads are still reeling from an incredible year that saw them pick up Best Group and Best Rock Album gongs at the New Zealand Music Awards. But they reckon it’s time to kick-start the next phase of their career.

“The songs on our first album were recorded nearly three years ago when a lot of the band was about 18 years’ old,” Redmore explains.

“We’ve hopefully grown up a bit since then and that’s being reflected in the stuff we are now writing.”

As a taster, at the end of this month Midnight Youth launch a new single Just for Once – but there’ll be no CD version and it’ll only be available as a download.

“I suppose releasing digital-only singles is just a reflection of the times we now live in,” Redmore says.

“But we’ve put together a nice little bundle of tracks including special acoustic versions of All On Our Own and Cavalry which are very different to the original recordings and well worth having.”

Despite spending a lot of time recently touring Australia, Redmore says Midnight Youth intend staying and playing in NZ over summer.

“Last year we did all the big NZ festivals like the Big Day Out, Rhythm and Vines and Homegrown so we won’t be going down that route again this time.

“We’ll be booking out a couple of big tours at home for the summer and we’ll be seeing pretty much the whole country.

Catch Midnight Youth at Revolver tomorrow from 10pm.
