A pair of nutty Aucklanders visiting for Winter Festival leapt into a freezing Lake Wakatipu yesterday to complete a list of mid-winter challenges.
Nathan Baynes and Jonny Hooper have driven south in the Grabaseat campervan and have taken the plunge in five chilly locations on their week-long road-trip.
The brave duo have donned boardshorts and swum at Taupo, Picton, Kaikoura and Dunedin – Queenstown was the last of their icy dips.
The challenge was the brainchild of Stanley, who used to swim everyday before university in Dunedin and wanted to re-ignite the tradition.
“It wakes up body and brain,” Stanley claims.
Grabaseat brand and marketing manager Sunil Unka, always keen for a new experience, joined in the chilly antics.
While one freezing dive would be too much for most people, the trio climbed out of the water and did a repeat performance – much to the amusement of lakefront on-lookers who were rugged up against the elements.
