Kayne’s hot samba rock

A staple of Queenstown cover music has branched out into what he’s calling samba rock with a new trio.

Melbournite Kayne Taylor, a popular singer-guitarist who performs in Wakatipu nightspots simply as Kayne, has teamed up with Brazilians Drix ‘Dr Drix’ Zaldo and Diego Vanzella.

Zaldo turns his hand to bongo drums, congas, chimes and shakers while Vanzella is a bassist.

They peform together as The Flavour while Taylor and Zaldo also perform as duo Uncle K.

Taylor says it mixes well with his melodic rock: “It’s samba rock – it’s everything I do solo but with percussion.

It’s a bit generic, basically for whatever the crowd is that we have in front of us.”

The pairing emerged from a six-piece band A Funk Conspiracy.

The trio plays late-night Friday gigs at Vinyl Underground.

Taylor adds: “I really like playing with those guys, they share the attention and it’s not just on me and I like that.

“Both are really high energy, they have that Brazilian party energy – I really dig it.”

Catch The Flavour on Fridays at Vinyl Underground or this Saturday at Ballarats from 9.30pm
