Australasia’s ‘Queen of boogie piano’, Jan Preston, plays and sings her original music at Gibbston’s Kinross tomorrow afternoon.
Originally a classical music pianist, Greymouth-born Preston had a no.1 hit, Doctor I Like Your Medicine, with her band, Coup D’Etat, in 1980, before moving to Sydney.
For tomorrow’s concert, where she’s joined by Mike Pullman on percussion, she’ll perform songs from her latest CD, Piano Boogie Woman, along with old boogie/blues favourites.
She’s been described as a magnetic live performer and astonishing piano player with a rich, resonant voice.
The winner of five music awards, she’s also written music for film and TV including her sister Dame Gaylene Preston’s film, My Year with Helen.
Having relocated from Sydney, thanks to Covid, she’s on a month-long South Island tour.
