Go hard with The Golightlies

Gala-goers can expect to get “down ‘n dirty” with The Golightlies tomorrow.

The trio will don their new 1920s flapper dresses for The Brecon Street Merchant’s Great Gatsby Gala.

Fee Stephenson, a social worker, fitness instructor Nicole McLean and Lisa Moore, a drama teacher, bustle with the rest of the Queenstown community by day.

But by night the ladies have been having a winter affair for the past year — as The Golightlies.

Stephenson describes their style as “swing pop fusion”.

The group met a few years back through Showbiz Queenstown and have brought their mutual love for musical theatre into their group.

“We do love all the cabaret musical things like Liza Minnelli and jazz singers like Ella Fitzgerald,” Stephenson says.

As a group their musical tastes are eclectic. But when one of them throws a new song into the mix the ladies are always keen to have a crack.

Stephenson: “We kinda go ‘yeah, okay we can do that random song’.”

The ladies put three-part harmonies into all of their songs “to give a bit of depth to it”, she says.

As for the music — they use backing tracks.

“When you haven’t got a band you’re really going for it with the harmonies — it can be pretty full on.”

The Golightlies take lots of different styles of music and add their own flavour, from Madonna to AC/DC to Nicki Minaj.

Choosing what to perform can be the biggest test — there are so many cool songs they want to do.

Unless you count “all going left when we’re supposed to be going left”, Stephenson says with a giggle.

The Golightlies do their own choreography.

Queenstowners can expect mood-setting, jazz-swing-style tunes for the first section of the gig.

Later on they’ll get the crowd on the dance floor.

Stephenson is hoping people will get a bit wild for the “illegal party-type thing”, she says.

This is one of few gigs The Golightlies have performed in Queenstown and the first time in a pub.

It’s going to be a massive party atmosphere, Stephenson says.

The Golightlies will perform at The Brecon Street Merchant tomorrow from 10pm-12.30am. Doors open at 8pm. Tickets are available on Eventfinda for $10. R18. Complimentary bubbles on the door and prizes
