If you like cowboys and/or aliens, you’re in for a treat with this latest offering from Iron Man director Jon Favreau.
Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig) wakes up in the middle of nowhere with no memories of his past, and a strange metal band slapped tightly around his wrist. He makes his way to the small town of Absolution, where strangers are looked upon with suspicion and the townsfolk live in fear of Percy Dolarhyde (the brilliant Paul Dano), who seems to get away with almost anything…because his father just happens to be rich cattleman Woodrow Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford). Dolarhyde remembers Jake as the man who stole his gold, and just as the standoff between Indiana Jones and James Bond, sorry, Jake and Dolarhyde is getting interesting, spaceships start attacking the town, and abduct several of the inhabitants. Jake’s magic bangle downs one of the marauding spaceships, though, and he sets out with Dolarhyde and a few others to go look for the abductees, and starts getting his memories back with the help of the mysterious Ella (Olivia Wilde)…
As genre mash-up movies go, this was actually not bad, not bad at all. The cast are all brilliant and the action sequences are brilliantly handled by the director. The aliens are well done and hardly look like CGI…think District 9’s aliens on steroids. And Harrison Ford? He has never been grumpier in a movie. Brilliant.
Only downpoint? The running time. The movie dragged a bit in the middle. But then Bond, sorry Jake, took off his shirt and time seemed irrelevant.
Just as it seems like Tom Cruise must have a clause in every contract stating he MUST be seen running towards the audience at some point, (check out the Mission Impossible 4 trailer before the feature), I strongly feel, and I think many other women will agree, that Daniel Craig must be forced by law to remove his shirt in every film. And wear tight trousers.
That’s not the real reason I think that lovely Daniel deserves the Standout Performance tag. Honest.
Anyway…this is a movie that delivers a lot of bang for your buck. There’s explosions, man-hunting aliens, an awesome all-star cast, and Indiana Jones and 007 in the same movie. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?
Standout Performance: Daniel Craig. Mean and moody done properly.
