Big fun for little treasures


The Winter Festival programme is stacked full of FREE events that are great for the junior guys and gals of the Wakatipu.

We look forward to seeing you at many of these events, and don’t forget to make sure mum or dad puts you in lots of layers for the outdoors.

Here are some of our top picks for kids …

What: American Express Opening Party and Fireworks
Where: Earnslaw Park
When: Friday, June 25, 6pm
Cost: FREE. Gold coin donations to the Bruce Grant Youth Trust

It’s all about celebrating the start of winter in true Queenstown fashion and this will be an opening party like no other. Southland musical sensations Pipeworkz kick things off with their fusion of bagpipes, poi and classic rock before the skies over Queenstown light up with the fireworks display at 7pm. Al fresco food stalls complete the winning formula so bring your pocket money for a saussie or two wrapped in bread.

A Festival family favourite. The streets of the resort come alive with a colourful parade of floats, superheroes and snowsports athletes, including the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympians. Local businesses, community groups and festival sponsors dedicate a huge amount of time and energy to create this spectacle so join the crowd, honour our winter athletes and have some fun.

Try your hand at snowman-making and catch the Ronald McDonald Magic Show – there’ll be heaps of fun and giveaways for the littlies and, of course, bouncy castles.

What: MoreFM Day on the Bay
Where: Earnslaw Park and Queenstown Bay
When: Sunday, June 27, noon
Cost: FREE

Wrap up warm and drag mum and dad down to the Bay to check out the MoreFM Birdman – there will be some outstanding birdmen and women lining up that will no doubt make you crack a giggle as they plunge head-first into the crisp waters of Lake Wakatipu. Also on the calendar are Jetsprints, which are back by popular demand, plus the Splash and Dash and the hilarious H&J Undy500.

Get silly, get wet and get wild about water! There are great prizes to be won, music from MoreFM, treasure hunts and more…so kids, grab your parents and get down to the warm waters of Alpine Aqualand.

What: Grabaseat Mountain Mayhem
Where: Coronet Peak
When: Saturday, July 3, noon onwards
Cost: FREE

A day of skifield fun and crazy antics for all the family, this is where to expect the unexpected. Watch as contestants take on some hard and fast courses in events such as the Suitcase Race, Musical Chairs and the Dash for Cash.

What: Cookie Time Teddy Bears Picnic
Where: Queenstown
Events Centre
When: Sunday, July 4, 11am
Cost: FREE

Children of the Wakatipu, gather up your parents, caregivers, nanas and teddy’s and come on down to the Cookie Time Teddy Bears Picnic at the Queenstown Events Centre. Cookie Muncher – an unmissable bundle of energy with bright red fur and a permanent smile on his friendly face – will be on hand to greet you with a Cookie Muncher hug!

Competitions for the Best Dressed Teddy Bear and the child with the Most Teddy Bears will be held plus there’s a special prize for the Best Dressed Little Person, awarded to the child who has made the most effort to come as their favourite character.

Enjoy face painting, a bouncy castle, story tellers and fun characters of all sizes and descriptions wandering about.

Don’t forget to bring your own picnic, including a rug and cushions, for the biggest and best Teddy Bears Picnic Lunch seen in the district.
