Queenstown is so full of adventure activities sometimes it’s easy to forget the tamer options on offer.
The Lakes District Museum in Arrowtown is one of these. Adrenaline junkies beware – this is not the place to fuel a thirst for thrills.
However, if knowledge be your tipple of choice, this is the spot.
The latest exhibition – Gold is where you find it – is part of the region’s 150th celebrations.
In keeping with the golden theme, sprinkles of the sparkly stuff glitter in several of the exhibition cases.
A giant gold nugget, 1.5m long, dangles from the ceiling.
Sadly, it’s only a replica of the biggest nugget ever found.
The exhibit itself is contained in one room. Informative panels adorn the walls touting stories about Central Otago and the Lakes District’s gold-speckled history.
There’s one particularly good yarn where a guy was looking for some gold to make his beloved an engagement ring. Not only was there gold in the river, but a ready-made ring was uncovered by his mate right at the spot he happened to be looking. What are the chances, huh?
This is the kind of luck that has eluded me my whole life.
The Lakes District Museum is a great place to spend a quiet day.
Take a break from jumping out of planes and absorb the history of the region.
Plus, at $2 for the gold exhibition or $8 for a full museum pass, it’s an affordable rarity in this place – akin to finding gold in the river.
