Top drop: Grant Taylor with his winning Valli Gibbston Vineyard Pinot Noir 2010
Veteran Queenstown winemaker Grant Taylor has won a third trophy for best pinot noir at the prestigious London International Wine and Spirits Competition.
Taylor, who’s made wine for 33 years, won the award today (Friday) for his Valli Gibbston Vineyard Pinot Noir 2010.
Previously he won the same award for his Gibbston Valley Reserve Pinot Noir 2000 and Bald Hills Pinot Noir 2005.
“To be awarded a trophy for a third time is a great honour in itself, but it being Valli, my own label, and especially the estate vineyard that’s being recognised, makes it much more gratifying,” Taylor says.
According to him, 2010 was one of Central Otago’s better vintages, but he says the wine’s quality can also be attributed to the fact that as vines get older they are able to ripen their grapes better.
“The most exciting thing is that these vines are only 13 years old, and vines are generally considered to produce their best grapes only after 20 or so years.”
