A former Wakatipu High head of department with wide leadership experience has been chosen as the school’s new principal.
New leader: New Wakatipu High principal Steve Hall
Steve Hall’s appointment was announced by the school’s board of trustees today (Wednesday).
Hall – currently chief executive of the Halberg Trust which promotes recreational opportunities for young disabled people – replaces Lyn Cooper, who resigned after a turbulent reign late last year.
Selection committee chairman Peter Macdonald, who was appointed the school’s statutory manager last year, says the field of applicants was exceptional and the process was extremely thorough.
Board chairman Alistair Nicholson adds that someone with exceptional leadership skills was sought, as well as someone with a strong educational background.
“We’re really excited to have found Steve Hall to fulfill that role.”
Hall – the Wakatipu High Year 11 dean and head of department in the 1990s – says the position has always been on his radar.
“Having greatly enjoyed my time at Wakatipu High in the ’90s, this was an exciting opportunity to combine my passion for young people and education with my leadership experience to take Wakatipu High forward into the future.
“As a family we are really excited about being part of the wonderful Wakatipu community again.”
After Wakatipu High he completed an MBA at Canterbury University and a course in non-profit management at Harvard University.
From 2003 to 2009 Hall was school director at Marlborough-based outdoor education school, Outward Bound.
In 2007 Hall received the Emerging Leader Award from the Sir Peter Blake Trust and twice while at Anakiwa the school was awarded the ‘best places to work’ award.
Prior to his Halberg Trust appointment in 2009 he settled back in Queenstown.
Hall, 47, is married to Sally Mingaye and has three sons, Trent, 15, Christopher, 10, and Stefan, 6.
Hall is due to take up his new role during the third term.
