Holding court: Queenstown's James Smith lines up a backhand as doubles partner Mark Milburn looks on during the Queenstown Open doubles final
A veteran Kiwi tennis player with Grand Slam experience has aced his more youthful rivals to win the Queenstown Open.

Christchurch’s Peter Hampton, 53, wound back the years, thrashing 17-year-old Queenstowner Harry James 6-2 6-1 in the semi. Hampton then won the final 6-3 6-1, thumping Christchurch’s Benji McGillivray, also 17.

The experienced Hampton got to the first round of the French Open back in the 1970s and made qualifying of the other three grand slams.

Canterbury teenager Leela Beattie, who is aiming to give the professional circuit a shot, won the women’s singles beating Queenstowner Louise Oxnevad in the final.

Beattie, 17, says she’s now planning to head to Australia to play tournaments and try to get some world ranking points.
