Having the Queenstown International Marathon in our backyard is inspiring many locals to give it a go.
An example is Jodie Adams, who admits she’d never have gone out of town to run a marathon.
“I just thought, I just want to do one in my life, and this may be the only one.”
The 35-year-old warmed up by running last year’s half – in 2hr 22min.
“I did it the day after my friend’s wedding – I just didn’t really think it through – which made it extra hard.”
Still, she still beat her 2:30 target.
This year, her build-up’s been hampered by having just spent two months in South America at really high altitude where she ran out of breath very quickly if she tried to run.
“But I did a lot of hiking and stuff and I’ve noticed it helped.”
A short-term property manager, Adams says she’s aiming for five hours this Saturday – “I don’t know if I will, but we will see”.
Though “quite nervous”, she expects to be buoyed by friends supporting her at various points along the course.
“I did really like it last year that having your name on you, just strangers would cheer you on.”
