Tourism boost: Queenstown tourism sector showing signs of recovery.
|
QUEENSTOWN’S tourism industry is beginning to recover from the impact of the Christchurch earthquake according to new official figures.
The November 2011 Commercial Accommodation Monitor results were released today (Wednesday).
They reveal it was the first positive-growth month, compared with the same month the previous year, since the February quake.
There was a five per cent increase in Queenstown “guest nights”. Nationally there was a 1.5 per cent decline on figures for November 2010.
Tony Everitt, Destination Queenstown boss, says: “While we are not out of the woods yet from the challenges presented by our global business environment, it’s heartening to see some steadiness returning to our figures.
“It was particularly boosted by strong domestic demand.”
The number of New Zealanders visiting Queenstown was up an encouraging 36.6 per cent on last November.
