Big games: Junior Queenstown golfers and siblings Danielle and Josh Bailey have qualified for the Junior Tiger final in the North Island
Two budding Frankton golfers are competing for the chance to grace the world stage and meet the legendary Tiger Woods.

The Bailey siblings Danielle, nine, and Josh, 11, both have their sights set on becoming pro players – and are already on the right course.

The talented pair, who just started competing this year, will tee off against more than 50 other young stars at the Junior Tiger final in Palmerston North on Sunday.

If they win their respective under-11 categories, they go into a draw to win a trip to the United States to represent New Zealand at The World Junior Golf Championships.

“So if we make it there, we’ll make it straight to Disneyland and get to meet Tiger Woods,” Danielle says.

Josh, on a 22 handicap and Danielle, with a 32.5 handicap, got to the finals by winning a regional qualifier in Invercargill last month.

Sibling rivalry is a driving force for the dedicated duo. They whack a bucket of balls almost every day and hit the fairways for a game at least a couple of times a week too.

The kids first picked up clubs at the tender age of six and have been playing at the Frankton nine-holer since.

Dad Carl says it’s the “cheapest sport to play”, stumping up $60 each year for the kids’ to play as much as they want.

“We come here because it’s just really fun,” Danielle says.

“The reason I enjoy it is you don’t need to run about, you can be calm and positive.”

And practice doesn’t stop when they go home.

Danielle: “I try to watch as much golf as I can on TV – to see what their swing is like and how they’re all calm.”
