Organisers of a kids’ golf initiative named after disgraced world No 1 Tiger Woods will review its name choice.

Junior Tiger – New Zealand Golf’s nationwide kids’ programme – is on display at the NZ Open’s Main Street hospitality area at The Hills golf course.

The mini course offers a range of fun golf activities aimed at getting youngsters into the sport.

NZ Golf also runs a competition to find the country’s “Junior Tiger” to represent NZ at the World Junior Golf Championships in the United States.

The initiative, launched in October last year, emerged one month before news of Woods’s string of affairs with women hit international headlines.

NZ Golf junior golf coordinator Liz McKinnon says the NZ Open’s Junior Tiger course will be a “good trial” to see if parents have any issues with their kids associating with the now-tarnished brand.

“It’s fair to say the board of NZ Golf may have some concerns and we will review [the name], but at this stage it’s nothing official,” McKinnon says.

“He’s still No 1. The kids still identify with Tiger, he’s their favourite golfer. If you say to a kid who do you want to be like, they say they want to be like Tiger.

“He’s still a golfer that kids aspire to in terms of his golfing performance.”
