Five Wakatipu High School acts won performance prizes at the recent annual Central Sound Waves — a contemporary music event for local youth — at Queenstown’s Yonder.

They comprise Estrogen, whose band member Emily Johnston is pictured performing, Goose Pies, Billie Carey, Best Served Chilled and Mala Januszkiewicz who, variously, scored New Year’s Eve gigs in Queenstown and Wānaka and gigs at Yonder and Arthurs Point’s Rakau.

A collaboration between Whakatipu Youth Trust and RockFormation Charitable Trust, the event featured 13 stage performances by bands,
duets and solo acts from Wakatipu High and Cromwell College performing covers or their own compositions.

RockFormation trustee Robynne Williams says ‘‘it’s great to be involved in such an event that is designed to provide young musicians with on-stage performance experience’’.

‘‘Not only does it develop musicians’ confidence, it’s an event that brings the entire community together.’’

Williams thanks the business community, Queenstown’s council, Yonder, Maya Music, Rakau and Central Lakes Trust for their support.

‘‘Feedback from the bands has been overwhelmingly positive.’’
