A new organising crew’s behind this year’s Whakatipu for Te Rā O Waitangi (Waitangi Day) celebrations — and they’re pumped to put on something for everyone.

After 2022 events were taken off the cards thanks to Covid, this years event welcomes back whānau to Kāroro (Queenstown Gardens) for live music, kai, kapa haka and more.

Mana Tāhuna kaiwhakahaere matua (chief operating officer) Ebony Webster (Ngāpuhi) says the day is all about getting back to our roots and commemorating te Tiriti in a way that makes people proud.

She says the organisation is well supported by Queenstown’s council and they have a good blueprint and strong vision to bring it all together.

Stallholders have been invited to raise money for causes that support the wider community, including Māori Women’s Welfare League and smaller initiatives.

The musical line-up is led by iconic Aotearoa reggae group Herbs, with two members performing an acoustic set.

Joining them is Matua Ned and Pearly, Castle Rock, Beauties and the Beast, and DJ Julio.

There’ll also be learning opportunities for those who want to educate themselves on te Tiriti, and Webster says there may be space for bigger wānanga in years to come.

‘‘It’s the first year for Mana Tāhuna … it’s just the beginning, we’re keeping it simple.’’

‘Waitangi Day at the Gardens 2023’ starts at noon on February 6; entry’s free.
