Celebrating: David Reid Homes franchisee Fraser Mackenzie, left, and contract manager Jamie Harper with their awards for their Hanley's Farm showhome

A showhome at Queenstown’s Hanley’s Farm was the sole local winner at Registered Master Builders’ national house-of-the-year awards held
recently in Auckland.

David Reid Homes Queenstown won the GIB showhome award for a pavilion-style, 301 square metre home that had made the top-100 list and also picked up a gold at the earlier southern awards.

Franchise owner Fraser Mackenzie says it’s the first time they’ve won the national showhome award and only the second time they’d entered that category.

‘‘This home has been built five times at the moment around New Zealand,’’ he says.

‘‘Everyone that walks in there says, ‘I want this, but I live in Te Anau or Auckland or somewhere’.’’

Those other homes had been built by other David Reid franchisees, Mackenzie says.

He says it’s ‘‘a beautiful alpine sort of home’’ that’s energy-efficient and has all the modern gadgets, along with about 18 skylights.

‘‘There’s a lot of work involved in having a great-looking, practical, efficient home in Queenstown; it’s not the easiest place to build due to the environment.’’
