He originally planned to retire at the end of 2020, but legendary Kiwi pianist Michael Houstoun returns to Arrowtown’s Lodge at The Hills this coming Monday to perform another classical concert hosted by Sir Michael and Christine, Lady Hill.

The 71-year-old, who’s played at least three times at what he calls ‘‘a very happy venue for me’’, will perform works by Liszt covering three aspects of his composing life, and Chopin’s ‘‘dramatic and brilliant’’ Sonata No.3 in B minor.

‘‘Expect a dazzling display of keyboard athletics and romantic melodies,’’ the Humanitix booking site promises.

Houstoun says ‘‘as long as your body holds up and your mind is not crumbling, you can keep playing and getting deeper into the music until you drop dead’’.

‘‘There is a magical element in music wherein the same piece can speak to you in quite different ways at different times.’’

Asked about The Hills’ Lodge, he states: ‘‘I have enjoyed a great relationship with the Michael Hill International Violin Competition, playing in the chamber music round and touring with four of the winners.

‘‘Playing at the Lodge is the icing on the cake — the best hosts and a fine piano.

‘‘The concerts are intimate and the entire environment is artistic — this will bring out the best in a performer.’’

Michael Houston in Concert, Lodge at The Hills, March 11, 7pm (6.30 for pre-concert glass of wine); $79 plus booking fee via Humanitix
