Lake St delayed

Fernhillians will have to live without Lake St access for another week or so.

It’s been closed since April 26 as part of work to install a new water main, sewer main and stormwater services along Man St for the billion-dollar Lakeview development.

While Kā Huanui a Tāhuna (Whakatipu Transport Programme Alliance) stakeholder manager Anita Sanghera says in an update the street was originally planned to reopen on June 30, a sign snapped by Mountain Scene shows it was actually meant to have opened on June 23.

It’ll now be closed until the morning of Monday, July 10, after work crews ‘‘unexpectedly’’ found, and had to replace, uncharted old asbestos pipework.

‘‘We have explored temporary traffic options for opening Lake St while we carry out the remaining work, however given the steepness of the road, and the winter ice and grit conditions, this is not safe for traffic.’’

Sanghera says to enable the road to reopen as soon as possible, the Alliance is closing Man St, from Hay St, and Lake St, with resident access only.

‘‘We are sorry for any inconvenience caused, and appreciate your understanding as we set to complete our construction works for the Lakeview development.’’
