One of the most distinctive homes in Queenstown’s Jack’s Point’s for sale for the first time.

On Caithness Court, on a reserve-fronting ridgeline, it was designed by multi-award-winning Arrowtown architect Anna-Marie Chin, and in 2016 was Home magazine’s ‘small home of the year’.

It’s also been featured in a number of architectural publications and TV programmes, and even has its own Instagram account, with about 2500 followers.

Chin worked closely with the client, who wanted a home that was small, compact and quirky.

Local New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty agent Ben Terry explains its form pushed the envelope for the Jack’s Point design review board, as it takes the standard gable shape found in other homes in the subdivision, but runs it diagonally from end to end.

The result is a house befitting of the dramatic Remarkables mountain range to the east.

But it also gives the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home some interestingly-angled walls.

‘‘The dynamism of the design is what I like the most, and it provides unique spaces all the way through,’’ Terry says.

Chin’s own favourite space is a mezzanine nook above the built-in dining booth.

Terry also likes the contrast between the dark-toned exterior and the interior honey-coloured ply.

The windows have been cleverly designed to allow in light throughout the day, and provide all the views you can get in Jack’s Point.

Well-grown flax bushes provide shelter for a hot tub.

There’s also room on the 1073 square metre section to add a self-contained two-bedroom unit, near the main house, which has already been approved by Jack’s Point’s design review board.

Amazingly, the house itself is only 158sqm.

Terry: ‘‘Clients we had the other day said, ‘gee, it’s a small house but there’s nothing small about it’’.

‘‘It’s a big house on a small footprint, if it makes sense.’’

The property’s for sale by deadline sale, closing this Friday, April 7.
