Puill on your waders — the Wakatipu Anglers Club’s holding its annual one-day flyfishing crash course on October 15.

The hands-on course teaches people to tie knots, select flies, read water and cast, as well as how to care for the environment and release fish properly.

Club co-president Don Wallace says the course is fully comprehensive and there’ll be one-on-one mentors as well as a line-up of speakers to teach the art of catching trout on the fly.

‘‘You’ll learn all sorts of techniques compared to going out and teaching your self, so it’s a great day,’’ Wallace says.

The day runs from 9am till 5pm at the Queenstown Events Centre and costs $150.

Those with their own equipment are encouraged to bring it along, however there’ll be plenty of loan gear available too.

The course is the club’s major fundraiser event for the year, with proceeds going towards club administration and hut maintenance.

Wallace, who’s been at the club for over a decade, says its strong membership is often subject to much admiration from other angler clubs around the country.

‘‘It’s a social club with an interest in fishing … membership’s at about 60 [people] and as the season goes on, numbers build up,’’ he says.

People interested in becoming members can do so for $60, which will also give them access to the club’s boat and fishing hut at Diamond Creek.

‘‘We run a trip every month where members go out fishing and they pair up … meet at the end of the day and tell their fishy stories,’’ Wallace says.
