You can get your glow on down Coronet Peak this Saturday night for the skifield’s first Torchlight Descent.

Organised by the Queenstown Alpine Ski Team (QAST), it’s aiming to raise funds for the Basin’s primary schools to help give more local kids the opportunity to go skiing.

QAST is a Snow Sports New Zealand-affiliated non-profit community group that gives children and adolescents the chance to learn and excel in alpine ski racing.

The programme’s spawned many pro racers, including world cup winner and junior world champ Alice Robinson.

People can buy a flame torch for $60 or glow stick for $20 to light their way down one of two descents on Saturday.

The first is at 5.30pm down the Meadows Express and the second, for more experienced skiers, at 8pm down Pro Am trail.

In between, at 7pm, up to 100 QAST kids will light up the mountain with a choreographed torch descent.

QAST board member and parent Lindsay Lake says the team hopes to raise $10,000 from the first-time event.

“QAST has been in the community for a long time and we know we’ve been given a lot … from the community and we thought this was a really wonderful opportunity for us to … give back.

“We hope with the torch light descent we can raise some funds … to help get more kids out into the snow and having a great time.”

The funds will enable schools to help pay for ski passes and snow gear for pupils.

‘‘We know it’s sometimes hard for families to get up on the snow, especially if they’ve not been introduced to the sport, so [this] … can help cover some of the sponsorship for some of the kids.”

They’re hoping it’ll become an annual event.
