By-election’s a go

A full by-election’s been triggered for a vacant seat around Queenstown’s council table.

Melissa White, who stood unsuccessfully in the Arrowtown-Kawarau ward last year, is having another crack at the seat left vacant by short-lived councillor Neeta Shetty.

Shetty, who also ran for the mayoralty during last year’s local body elections, resigned with immediate effect on February 1, less than four months after being sworn in.

In a statement at the time, the business owner — who took the third seat in the ward with 1542 votes — said she was standing down for personal reasons, which made continuing ‘‘untenable’’.

White polled fifth in the ward last year with 1081 votes, behind Nell Hunter (1162), who didn’t run again.

Glenorchy Community Association chair John Glover, who also works for Shaping Our Future and Headlight, is also standing, meaning a $50,000 by-election’s now required.

Voting papers will be sent out to the Arrowtown-Kawarau ward voters on April 13.
