Moving forward: Active Queenstown Inner Wheel members include, back row, from left, Jenny Mason, district chair Monica P Mulholland, immedi ate past-president Lee-Ann Murray, Vivienne Hunt, Anne Goldman and, front row, immediate past-national president Alyssandra Skerrett and president Nell Hunter

An Arrowtowner who only joined women’s service organisation Inner Wheel last year has become president of the Queenstown branch.

Nell Hunter says what she likes about Inner Wheel — which has over 120,000 members in 100-plus countries — is ‘‘it’s a friendship group that empowers women from all walks of life, from all ages, and brings us together for service and the community’’.

She adds the support it offers members is important for many women who don’t have immediate family here.

Under 2022-23 president Lee-Ann Murray, the Queenstown club — which will celebrate its 45th anniversary in November — added nine new members to bring it up to 45 members.

That was the biggest increase of any Inner Wheel in the southern district — whose chair, incidentally, is past local president Monica P Mulholland.

Over the year the club donated $12,880 between 11 causes and contributed 621 community service hours.

Members raised $7000 alone through helping direct traffic at the Queenstown Marathon.

Meanwhile, Queenstown’s Alyssandra Skerrett’s just finished her year as Inner Wheel’s national president.

She says what’s exciting is each club’s charitable work, from donations to community service hours, contributes to the number of Inner Wheel reps at the United Nations.

Those reps have speaking rights on issues relevant to women, children, the family and the elderly.
