Queenstown pyro technician Bill Falcone (above) is promising more than just a spectacular fireworks display for tomorrow night’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.

“It will be the largest show the Wakatipu’s ever seen,” he says.

Falcone will let off mega fire crackers in Queenstown Bay at midnight for about eight minutes as part of the downtown festivities.

They’ll be positioned on a barge loaned by Cecil Peak Station and on another vessel Falcone purpose-built for the occasion. “It’s all going to be synchronised between the two,” he says.

For safety reasons, parts of Queenstown Gardens will be closed to spectators and boats aren’t allowed in Queenstown Bay. Falcone warns people with sensitive hearing may want to bring earplugs.

The free celebrations in Marine Parade and Earnslaw Park kick off at 7.30pm. Bands performing at the Memorial Gate stage include The Master Blasters, The Crystal Set, plus DJ Asbro, Hand Solo and Dan Move.
