Aiming high: Up-and-coming Queenstown footballer Tane Gent

A Queenstown teen is closer to his football dream after being snapped up by one of New Zealand’s leading clubs.
Arrowtowner Tane Gent, 17, will this season be the youngest player at top men’s side Canterbury United Dragons.
There the talented youngster will rub shoulders with crack team-mates including current All White and football World Cup midfielder Aaron Clapham.
“Training alongside guys of that kind of calibre is great experience for me,” Gent says.
“The new season is starting soon and I can’t wait to show what I can do.”
Gent is no stranger to top-flight competition.
Last year in Nigeria, he was part of the first All Whites junior side to make the knockout stages of the under-17 World Cup. In April this year, the right midfielder also scored for the NZ under-19 schoolboys team in a 2-1 win over Ireland in the United Kingdom.
A Year 12 student at St Andrew’s College in Christchurch, Gent is already knocking on the door of the All Whites under-20 side, having turned out for them in a recent match against Wellington Phoenix.
“Things have been going pretty well for me for the last few years and in the long run I’d like to be a full-time footballer, preferably somewhere overseas,” he says.
