Youngsters’ smashing result

Queenstown Primary cricketers slogged their way to a prestigious final last week.

The boys’ Year 7 and 8 team was just pipped from taking out the Otago region’s primary school final against Dunedin’s John McGlashan College as part of the New Zealand Cricket Cup last Wednesday.

The local boys had spent the past school term knocking out schools in the Central Otago Twenty/20 league before facing off against Otago’s best in the deciding matches in Invercargill.

Queenstown Primary had a convincing win over Dunedin’s Balmacewen Intermediate before being beaten by John McGlashan by 23 runs.

“With a place in the national finals at stake the boys had a lot to play for,” teacher and coach Tom Merrall says.

“But it’s a pretty good feat getting to the Otago finals and actually winning the semi. They’re punching above their weight really, a lot of those other schools have a lot more kids.

“The team and I would like to thank all the parents who help with transport and support,” Merrall adds.
