Wannabe ski racers converge on Coronet Peak this Saturday for the first in a series of hotly-contested junior events.
Youngsters aged five to 16 will test their speed on the slopes in the Dynastar/ Lange Junior Interfield Ski Race Series, starting at 10.30am. It’s a chance for kids to taste ski racing, Snow Sports New Zealand alpine manager James Lazor says.
“It’s great to see the youngsters be able to compete with a little bit of pressure but also a lot of fun,” Lazor says.
“About 150 or 160 kids will be competing in the series. It’s the start of our grass roots programme and the more kids the merrier.”
This weekend’s race is the first in a series of six involving kids across five age categories.
Next Saturday, competitors are at Treble Cone. The Remarkables hosts races on August 1, followed by two consecutive days at Round Hill skifield, on August 14 and 15.
The final is at Cardrona on September 5. Prizes include a ski camp in Switzerland.
