Young athletes at the double

Arrowtowner Devoney Spark, 13, and Queenstowner Brooklyn Niwa, 12, starred at this month’s grade 12 and 13 interprovincial athletics champs in Invercargill.

Devoney ran the fastest 100 metres by 13-year-old girls, setting a personal best of 13.24sec. She was seventh in the 200m with 27.36sec.

Brooklyn was runner-up in the long jump for 12-year-old boys, though his 4.44m leap was short of his personal best. He also ran the 10th fastest 100m, in 13.09sec.

Devoney’s success came despite a recent broken wrist and diabetic condition.

“She could be a national level athlete or even better in the next few years,” coach Lance Smith of Invercargill says.
