Power and good race tactics helped Wakatipu High School runners clean up at the Milton Relays last week.

The senior boys team, a four-man crew of Benjamin Britton, 17, pictured right, Archie Ritchie, 18, Gareth Harcombe, 17, and Aleks Cheifetz, 16, far right, won by over a minute from their nearest rivals to scoop the senior boys’ over-15 title.

They dominated the race as they took turns sprinting the four laps of the two-kilometre-long circuit in a time of 23mins 9secs.

And they weren’t the only WHS team to win on the day at the annual Milton relay races held by the Otago Secondary Schools Sports Association.

In the junior mixed U15 category race, the Wakatipu mixed U15 team including runner Hannah Battrick, 15, left, came home almost three minutes ahead of second-placed Taieri College, completing the four-lap relay race in a time of 26mins 55 secs.

Forty-four high schools and college teams from around the region competed for honours at the Tokomairiro High School cross country course.
