It’s official – you can run around Queenstown’s Lake Hayes in only 25 minutes and 18 seconds.
That’s the time Cromwell’s Daniel Balchin (above) took to win the men’s open title at last Saturday’s first Lap of Lake Hayes Race.
About 40 athletes lined up for the Athletics New Zealand-sanctioned event, meaning Balchin’s time is now the official record for the undulating eight-kilometre track.
The women’s open winner was Dunedin’s Margie Campbell in 29.16sec.
The under-19 winners were Queenstown’s Aleks Cheifetz and Invercargill’s Emily Hay, while the masters winners, also from Invercargill, were Kelvin Meade and Debbie Telfour.

The guests of honour were Kiwi middle distance legends Lorraine Moller and Rod Dixon.
