Wheelie good week ahead for mountain folk

Top Kiwi and international mountain bikers will descend on Queenstown this weekend for five days of gravity-defying action in between two big competitions.

The inaugural Week of Wonder, which starts this Monday, falls between the Nzone Breakburner downhill race at Coronet Peak on Saturday and the NZ South Island Cup Round Two at Coronet Peak on February 14-15.

Week of Wonder organiser Seb Kemp says top riders traditionally stay in town between the two events so he decided to make the most of their presence for local riders – as well as “showcasing” Queenstown Mountain Bike Club facilities.

“It’s an amalgamation of lots of different events to make it a kind of festival atmosphere for the whole week.”

Monday will kick off with a crosscountry race at the Seven Mile course, followed by an invitational downhill under the Skyline Gondola on Tuesday.

An “expression session” will be held at the Gorge Road trails on Wednesday and the uber D downhill from Bob’s Peak to Revolver Bar is on Thursday.

The week finishes with a pump track party at the Gorge Rd trails on Friday.
